The first subsection provides us with some information about the author and the main character of the book. The theoretical part comprises of three subsections. The practical part includes my translation of the extract from The Secret 5ĭiary of Adrian Mole Aged 13 ¾ and the original English version. Regarding the structure of the thesis, it is divided into two main parts, practical and theoretical. Therefore, another aim of the thesis is to demonstrate that several stylistically diverse, but still correct translations of a particular text can co-exist. Furthermore, the differences in our translations could arise from the different periods which they were written in since languages develop and popularity of particular expressions change over time, or simply by dissimilar interpretations of the original. Generally, she uses less expressive and colloquial expressions.

In contrast to the style of my translation, Hartlová-Císařová‘s translation is more formal. Having read her translation, I realised that our view on the main character of the book and, consequently, the style of our translation would be different. Moreover, within the frame of the analysis I want to compare my translation with the only official translation written by Helena Hartlová-Císařová. Therefore, I will try to outlet not only the most frequent causes of untranslatability, but also translation procedures in this thesis. Many of them are actually convinced that untranslatability does not exist and they cope with untranslatability by employing a number of procedures. Partial or total untranslatability occurs relatively often, and thus it deserves special attention of philologists. I intend to focus on the questions of equivalence and untranslatability which is the term for a phenomenon when an expression in one language has no equivalent in another language. Concerning the extract for the diploma thesis, it has been selected with respect to my intentions and objectives. Since I have already devoted myself to the translation and analysis of this book in the bachelor thesis, I want to base my diploma thesis on some of its ideas and examine them in greater detail. Moreover, it is considered ingeniously humorous with numerous elements of parody, and it comprises a wide range of linguistic phenomena representing a significant challenge for translators.
